Synopsis
Wings of Song (1966) is a Kazakh drama by Azerbaizhan Mambetov, available to watch online on iFILM. It adapts Nikolai Anov's novel about Musa, a young folk poet whose life echoes that of the akyn Isa Baizakov in the 1920s and 30s.
Musa has the gift but little defense against temptation, and that is exactly what a wealthy bai named Nurtaza counts on. Hoping to turn the poet into an ally against the new Soviet order, he bends him to his will step by step, playing on his vanity and his weakness for beautiful women. The drama plays out as a quiet struggle for a gifted man's soul, pulled between fame, love and honor. The cast features Anuarbek Moldabekov, Torgyn Tasybekova and Asanali Ashimov.
This one belongs to the golden stretch of sixties Kazakh cinema, where a song carries as much weight as a spoken word and the steppe is filmed with real tenderness. A good pick for anyone curious about the national dramas of that era and the story of one troubled poet. Stream Wings of Song (1966) online on iFILM.
