Synopsis

Helen is seven years old. A childhood illness left her unable to see or hear, and the years since have been one long, private fury. By the time twenty-year-old Annie Sullivan travels from Boston to Tuscumbia, Alabama, the Keller family has nearly given up. Annie is half-blind herself — her vision damaged by disease during years spent in a state institution — and she has no patience for the pity that surrounds Helen in that house.
