Synopsis
The Intruder (1962) is a black-and-white drama from Roger Corman you can watch online on iFILM. On the eve of school integration, a stranger in a spotless white suit arrives in a small Southern town, calls himself a social reformer, and quietly sets neighbor against neighbor.
A very young William Shatner plays Adam Cramer, years before he ever boarded the Enterprise. Cramer works the porches and street corners, flattering and frightening people by turns until a calm town boils over into hatred he can no longer steer. Corman shot the picture fast and largely with his own money, adapting Charles Beaumont's novel — Beaumont wrote the script and appears on screen. Filming happened in real Missouri towns, with locals cast as the crowd, most of them unaware of the story.
It is the only film Corman has said lost money, and also the angriest and most personal of his long career. A blunt, uncomfortable look at racism and at how one smooth talker can weaponize other people's fear. If you only know Corman from cheap monster pictures, this shows a sharper side.
