Synopsis
Lafertovskaya Makovnitsa (1986) is a Soviet animated short you can watch online on iFILM. It adapts the gothic tale of the same name by Antony Pogorelsky — one of the earliest Russian stories about the uncanny and the supernatural.
A girl is sent off to her grandmother in the old Lafertovo district of Moscow to fetch poppy-seed cakes and the closely guarded recipe behind them. The trouble is, grandmother is no ordinary baker: beneath the cozy sweets trade hides real witchcraft, and the family inheritance comes with a string attached that's hard to refuse. Ten quiet, genuinely shadowy minutes of folk horror in hand-drawn form.
