Synopsis
Bitter Juniper (Gorky Mozhzhevelnik, 1986) is a Soviet war drama by Baras Khalzanov that you can watch online on iFILM. It moves to 1943 and a remote Buryat village in the Siberian rear, thousands of kilometers from the front.
The men have gone to fight. What's left are the elderly, the women, and the teenagers — fifteen-year-olds who suddenly carry the whole load of life behind the lines. They graze the horses, run the mill, mind the youngest children while their mothers work. These boys ache to join their fathers at the front, yet they grasp a harder truth: no one else can keep the village alive.
