Synopsis
Stone (1992) is a meditative fantasy drama from Aleksandr Sokurov that you can watch online on iFILM. The whole film fits inside one night and stays almost entirely within the walls of the Anton Chekhov house-museum in Yalta. A young watchman is left alone among the empty rooms, where everything still seems to breathe with the long-absent owner.
Then a weary stranger turns up in the museum's bathroom — uncannily like the writer himself, as if returned from the dead. He washes without hurry, refuses to leave, and answers the watchman's requests to clear out with little more than a mutter. What grows between the guard and his late-night guest is a hushed, nearly wordless exchange about death, memory and time. Leonid Mozgovoy plays the Chekhov figure alongside Pyotr Aleksandrov; the camera drifts slowly, the light stays low, and the film holds you through mood rather than plot.
This is pure auteur cinema, closer to a vision than a story: Sokurov isn't filming a biography of the great playwright but the feeling of his unseen return. For viewers ready to settle into a slow, contemplative rhythm, Stone opens up as a deep and remarkably quiet experience. Blockbuster fans should look elsewhere.
