Synopsis
Krasny Lyod. Saga o khantakh (Red Ice: A Saga of the Khanty, 2010) is Oleg Fesenko's historical drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Think of it as a northern western, where a small Siberian people takes up arms to live by its own laws.
The story moves into the Ob taiga of the early 1930s, when Soviet power reached the lands of the Khanty and set about breaking a way of life centuries old. A settlement by a sacred lake answers with rifles: reindeer hunters scatter the first detachment sent against them and retreat east into the Nadym tundra, with fresh troops out of Yekaterinburg tracking their ski trail. The snow they leave behind no longer stays white. The script grows out of Yeremey Aypin's novel about the Kazym revolt of 1933–1934.
It leans on the texture of the far North — nomad camps, sledges, a shaman's rite — and refuses to flatten the tragedy into a poster; no side here is clean. Heavy, honest cinema for anyone drawn to the history of indigenous peoples. Stream Krasny Lyod (2010) online on iFILM.
