Katya, a Soviet girl in her final year of school, falls for a German boy named Alexander — a romance that feels unstoppable. Then the war arrives, and the two of them end up on opposite sides of the front.
The title makes no secret of where this goes: Katya takes up a sniper rifle, and her private heartbreak dissolves into a far larger fight where anyone could turn up in the crosshairs.
