Young journalist Andrei Petrushov takes a temporary job teaching Russian language and literature at an ordinary school. On the side he is chasing a lost manuscript by the writer Pustyrev, who vanished in 1937. The class is a hard one, every teacher in the staff room carries a private truth, and the missing novel slowly ties the country's past to Petrushov's own present.
