Strange Invaders

Strange Invaders (1983) is a sci-fi mystery with a horror streak you can watch online on iFILM. Director Michael Laughlin built it as a love letter to cheap 1950s alien flicks, tongue firmly in cheek. A New York professor drives out to a sleepy Midwestern town to track down his missing ex-wife. Nobody there will admit she ever existed.

Charlie (Paul Le Mat) soon figures out why. Aliens quietly took over Centerville twenty-five years ago, and they are still wearing human faces. A tabloid reporter nobody believes (Nancy Allen) ends up his only ally, with Louise Fletcher and Wallace Shawn turning up along the way. The film plays it sly rather than scary, poking gentle fun at the genre it clearly adores. Good pick for anyone who misses retro science fiction made without a billion-dollar effects budget.
