Zhenya comes back to his provincial hometown after seven years of contract military service and barely recognizes the place — his former girlfriend is on drugs, and so is most of the town's youth.

His mother and stepfather, an Afghan War veteran, are locked in a fight to keep the family sawmill out of the hands of local criminals.
