Season 5

Synopsis

The penultimate run: St. Elsewhere season 5 (1986), 23 episodes, watch online on iFILM. For the first time a real threat hangs over St. Eligius — the Boston hospital could be sold and torn down.

Its centerpiece is "After Life." Shot and slipping away, Dr. Fiscus wanders the hereafter, meets patients who died on his watch and friends long gone, and walks through his own version of hell and heaven. People remember that hour on its own, apart from the series. Around it: mandatory drug testing splits the staff, a pathologist is caught selling the organs of the dead, and a string of mercy killings demands an answer. Dr. Craig wrecks his hand and resents his stand-in, Dr. Kiem.

Creator Bruce Paltrow steers everything toward an ending — a buyer comes to read the building's "aura," and Auschlander finally fights the wrecking crew sent for St. Eligius. This season takes bolder swings at form than any before it. Watch all St. Elsewhere season 5 episodes on iFILM.
