Nella Oortman arrives as a new bride in the household of wealthy merchant Johannes Brandt. Her husband barely looks at her. His sister Marin runs the house with unsettling precision. When Nella commissions a miniaturist to furnish a cabinet house — an exact copy of the one she now lives in — figures start arriving she never asked for, each one an uncanny preview of what comes next. Then Johannes draws the attention of the Amsterdam authorities, and Nella finds herself alone in a house full of locked doors.
