Synopsis

Journalist Mikael Blomkvist, fresh from a slander conviction, takes a job no one else wants: find out what happened to Harriet Vanger, missing for forty years on a family island in northern Sweden. Unknown to him, hacker Lisbeth Salander had already started digging. The first two episodes cover "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" — a closed island, old family secrets, five women with something in common. Episodes three and four shift to "The Girl Who Played with Fire": Lisbeth is now the murder suspect, and the trail runs through a sex-trafficking ring with powerful clients. The final pair bring her to trial while a shadowy branch of the security services quietly works to stop Mikael from finding out why they're afraid of her.

As Mikael continues to try to prove Lisbeth's innocence to the police, Lisbeth continues to find the leader of the sex trafficking ring, but it may be the last person she would ever expect to see.

A branch of the Secret Police begins to feel threatened by the outcome of the "Zala" incident. Now, in order to protect themselves, they decide to silence those who may be considered a threat to them, including Lisbeth.

As Lisbeth's trial begins, Mikael races against time to gather information to acquit her, but "The Section" begins a new course of action to stop Mikael's investigation: striking out against Erika and Mikael themselves.
