Andrew Sterling (Samuel L. Jackson) is a Pulitzer Prize-winning Black playwright who buys a summer house on a New England island and, that same night, gets surrounded by armed police because a neighbour decided he looked like a burglar. Police Chief Tolliver (Dabney Coleman) figures out the mistake fast enough to be embarrassed — and slow enough to make it worse. His fix: pull petty crook Amos Odell (Nicolas Cage) out of a cell and stage a fake hostage standoff to bury the story. Two men who have nothing in common are now stuck performing the same charade.
