Synopsis
Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950) is Otto Preminger's tightly wound film noir you can watch online on iFILM. Detective Mark Dixon, played by Dana Andrews, has always been one step away from becoming the criminals he hunts — too quick with his fists, too ready to cross a line. When a routine interrogation goes wrong and a suspect ends up dead, Dixon sees a way out: frame the racketeer he's been after for years and bury his own guilt with the case.
The cover-up spirals fast. Gene Tierney plays Morgan, the dead man's daughter, who somehow reads something worth saving in Dixon — and that's the film's real tension, not the police procedural. Karl Malden is the detective closing in from the other side of the law. Preminger keeps the frames shadowy and the moral geography deliberately murky; no one here is clean, and the ending earns its gut-punch without sentiment.
