Synopsis
21 Jump Street (1987), Season 1 is the Fox crime drama you can watch online on iFILM — thirteen episodes about cops young enough to pass for teenagers. Officer Tom Hanson lands in a secret unit that sends fresh-faced detectives undercover into high schools.
Most cases stand alone, but a thread runs through them: what wearing a fake identity does to the people wearing it. Hanson and Penhall slip into a preppie clique where a prank turned deadly. Hoffs refuses to believe the right arsonist is behind bars and waits for him to strike again at the prom. Then, mid-season, Jenko is killed by a drunk driver and Captain Fuller takes over during a hostage standoff with Hanson trapped inside. Later episodes drop the team onto a mob-targeted baseball team, into a shady modeling school, and between two warring street gangs.
This is the show that launched Johnny Depp, and the early season plays like a slice of late-eighties television — soft around the edges, surprisingly blunt about subjects networks rarely touched back then.
