By September 1846, both HMS Terror and HMS Erebus are frozen solid. Captain Franklin (Ciarán Hinds) refuses to grasp the scale of their trouble; Captain Crozier (Jared Harris) sees it clearly, though he fights his own battle with the bottle. Provisions dwindle, a strange illness spreads through the crew, and something moves across the ice that is not an ordinary bear. Ship's surgeon Goodsir works to understand what connects the Inuit woman known as Lady Silence to the creature stalking them, while the officers argue about whether to abandon the ships.
