Synopsis
School Daze (1988) is Spike Lee's musical comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM. The whole thing plays out over homecoming weekend at the fictional Mission College, one of America's historically Black universities in the South.
Activist student Dap pushes his classmates to boycott apartheid-era South Africa, while his cousin Half-Pint will do almost anything to pledge the campus's most coveted fraternity. The women, meanwhile, split into rival camps drawn along lines of skin tone and hair texture — a thread that cuts far deeper than the comedy surrounding it. Laurence Fishburne, Giancarlo Esposito, Tisha Campbell and a very young Samuel L. Jackson move through the song-and-dance numbers with a sharp satirical edge.
Lee's second feature is a strange, bold hybrid: a splashy college musical built around a blunt argument about colorism inside the Black community itself. He shot it at his own alma mater, and it closes on a character shouting "Wake up!" straight down the lens — a call Lee would keep sounding for decades. Uneven, daring, alive.
