Synopsis
Underground (2016) is a historical drama series from WGN America you can watch online on iFILM. Aldis Hodge and Jurnee Smollett-Bell lead a cast built around a Georgia cotton plantation in the years before the Civil War.
Ten enslaved people plan a break for the North. Six hundred miles on foot, through swamp and open road, with slave catchers on their trail from the first hour. Along the way they find allies — a white abolitionist couple running a station on the covert network of escape routes that history calls the Underground Railroad, though the railroad had no tracks: just attic floors, cellar holes and people who knew when to stay quiet.
The series refuses a single angle. Aldis Hodge's Noah maps the escape in secret while Jurnee Smollett-Bell's Rosalee discovers she is capable of far more than the plantation ever gave her room to be. Christopher Meloni plays a white farmer whose quiet complicity becomes impossible to sustain. The show runs at thriller speed without losing the weight of its subject.
