Synopsis
The Awakening (1980) is a British-American supernatural horror film you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Mike Newell and adapted from Bram Stoker's 1903 novel The Jewel of Seven Stars. Charlton Heston plays archaeologist Matthew Corbeck, who breaks the seal on the tomb of the Egyptian queen Kara — and at the exact moment the sarcophagus opens, his daughter is born.
The film builds on that coincidence with deliberate dread. Susannah York plays Corbeck's wife, watching the girl change in ways she can't explain. Ian McDiarmid and Miriam Margolyes appear in supporting roles, years before either became household names. Newell — long before Four Weddings and a Funeral or Goblet of Fire — works here in a cold, ritualistic register that owes more to folk horror than to shock tactics.
