Synopsis
I Confess (1953) is Alfred Hitchcock's crime thriller, and you can watch online on iFILM. In Quebec City, Father Michael Logan hears a killer confess to murder inside the confessional. His vow of silence binds him completely — even as the evidence starts pointing straight at him.
The dead man was robbed, and the police find a motive linking Logan to the crime: an old connection to a married woman he once loved. Speaking the truth would break his vows; staying silent means standing trial for a murder he didn't commit. Montgomery Clift plays it with a near-motionless face that carries the whole moral weight. Anne Baxter is the woman from his past, Karl Malden the dogged inspector, and O.E. Hasse the real killer hiding behind another man's guilt.
Hitchcock shot on location in Quebec, and the city's grey stone and overcast sky do as much work as any set. It's one of his sternest and most overlooked pictures — light on showy set pieces, heavy on a genuine moral trap. Stream I Confess (1953) online on iFILM.
