About

Synopsis

Topaz (1969) is an Alfred Hitchcock Cold War spy thriller you can watch online on iFILM, adapted from Leon Uris's novel drawn from an actual French intelligence scandal. Copenhagen, 1962: a defecting Soviet official hands the Americans a lead pointing to a covert network operating inside Cuba — right as the missile crisis is building to its peak.

The trail runs from Havana to Paris and ends somewhere inside NATO. French agent André Devereaux follows it, played by Frédéric Stafford opposite Michel Piccoli and Claude Jade. What he finds implicates people in his own government, which means the enemy isn't only in Moscow.

Hitchcock stripped out most of the Technicolor tension of his earlier work and let the espionage machinery run cold. The film works best as a procedural: safe houses, dead drops, coded identities, human assets who get burned. It's less a thriller than a quiet argument that loyalty in statecraft is a commodity with a shelf life. Stream Topaz (1969) online on iFILM.
