Synopsis
Blackmail (1929) is Alfred Hitchcock's landmark crime thriller you can watch online on iFILM — the first British sound feature film ever made, and already a Hitchcock picture in every meaningful way. Scotland Yard detective Frank Webber is more absorbed in his caseload than in his girlfriend Alice White. She takes up an invitation from a charming artist. The evening ends in his studio, in violence, and in a death Alice caused to protect herself.
Before anyone official knows what happened, a bystander who saw too much shows up with leverage. Hitchcock pivots from crime drama to psychological pressure — guilt, the geometry of a lie held together by two people, and the particular dread of a detective whose own partner is unknowingly hunting the truth. The pacing is measured by modern standards, but the mechanics are already sharp.
Anny Ondra plays Alice; because she had a strong German accent, her voice was dubbed live in the studio by Joan Barry speaking into a separate microphone during recording — a technical footnote that says everything about how improvised early sound cinema actually was.
