Synopsis
Modern Romance (1981) is Albert Brooks' comedy of nerves, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Brooks writes, directs and stars as Robert Cole, a Hollywood film editor who dumps his girlfriend Mary while having no real idea whether he loves her or simply can't function without her.
The breakup lasts about one lonely night. Robert loads up on Quaaludes and vitamins at the drugstore, phones his ex at three in the morning, takes up jogging to "start fresh," then sprints back to win her again. Kathryn Harrold plays Mary straight, never a punchline, while Robert is a study in jealousy so corrosive it manufactures its own crises. On the job he's cutting a cheap sci-fi flick, and the sound-mixing scenes are a small masterpiece of workplace absurdity.
Brooks made something rare: a romantic comedy that refuses to flatter how love works. Stanley Kubrick reportedly called it the most accurate film about jealousy he had ever seen. It lands hardest for anyone who recognizes their own petty insecurities and can laugh at them. Stream Modern Romance (1981) online on iFILM.
