About

Synopsis

Ethel & Ernest (2016) is a hand-drawn British animated drama you can watch online on iFILM. It's a forty-year love story: milkman Ernest and lady's maid Ethel meet in the late 1920s, marry, and spend a whole era together in one ordinary London house.

Raymond Briggs drew the graphic novel about his own parents, and Roger Mainwood carried it to the screen frame by frame, all by hand. The Depression, the Blitz, postwar change, the arrival of the family television and the growing-up of their son all pass through a small kitchen and the quiet talk of two people who simply love each other. Jim Broadbent and Brenda Blethyn lend their voices.

It's a gentle, unhurried film where the big history of the twentieth century shows up in the daily life of one couple. No spectacle — just warmth, soft humour and a slow ache toward the end. Best for anyone who treasures grown-up animation like When the Wind Blows and doesn't mind a tear at the close. Stream Ethel & Ernest (2016) online on iFILM.
