Synopsis
"The Nutcracker" (1993) — watch online on iFILM this film adaptation of Tchaikovsky's Christmas ballet, performed by the New York City Ballet. Director Emile Ardolino brought the full company to the screen and framed the choreography for the camera, not for the back rows of a theater.
On Christmas Eve, young Marie receives a wooden Nutcracker as a gift. At midnight the toy comes to life. A battle against the Mouse King's army, a kingdom of snow and sweets, and the Nutcracker Prince — played by Macaulay Culkin at the height of his fame — escorts Marie through all of it. Kevin Kline narrates. Principal dancers Darci Kistler and Damian Woetzel carry the film.
Ardolino had already worked with performers on screen in "Dirty Dancing" six years earlier, and it shows in how the dancing reads here — vivid rather than distant. Stream "The Nutcracker" (1993) on iFILM.
