Synopsis
The Stepford Wives (1975) is a landmark American thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Bryan Forbes from Ira Levin's novel. Joanna and her husband leave Manhattan for Stepford, Connecticut — a spotless suburb where the lawns are perfect and the wives are perfectly content to tend them.
Too content. Joanna, played by Katharine Ross, notices that the women here have no opinions, no ambitions, and no apparent memory of who they used to be. She befriends her neighbor Bobbie, played by Paula Prentiss — the only person in Stepford who still seems like herself — and together they start asking questions the local men's association would very much prefer they didn't. The film arrived in 1975 and landed as a precise feminist fable about what happens when men decide women would be better off domesticated and compliant.
The word "Stepford" became shorthand for exactly that dynamic long after the credits rolled. Forbes and cinematographer Owen Roizman keep the Connecticut setting oppressively pleasant — no dark corridors, just sunshine and unease. Stream The Stepford Wives (1975) online on iFILM.
