About

Synopsis

In My Father's Den (2004) is a New Zealand mystery drama you can watch online on iFILM. War journalist Paul Prior comes back to the small town he fled seventeen years ago, this time to bury his father. The place still turns his stomach — too much of his past lies buried in it.

Back home, Paul strikes up a friendship with Celia, a sixteen-year-old aspiring writer who feels trapped by provincial life. They bond over books and a shared hunger for somewhere bigger, but the town reads the relationship differently and disapproves. When Celia suddenly vanishes, the returning outsider becomes the prime suspect, and clearing his name forces Paul to crack open family secrets he has kept locked for years.

Directed by Brad McGann from Maurice Gee's novel, this quiet, brooding film was his only feature. Matthew Macfadyen plays Paul, with Miranda Otto and Emily Barclay alongside him. The whodunit is really a way into questions of guilt, memory and who you end up becoming instead of who you meant to be. Stream In My Father's Den (2004) online on iFILM.
