Synopsis

Years earlier, racketeer Whit Sterling (Kirk Douglas) hired him to track down Kathie Moffat, who'd shot Whit and run off with his money. He found her in Mexico and fell for her instead of bringing her back. Now the debt has come due, and every step toward Whit pulls the trap tighter. Jane Greer plays Kathie as a femme fatale you keep wanting to trust right up to the moment you shouldn't.
Tourneur lets the plot coil until you're as lost in it as the hero, while cinematographer Nicholas Musuraca turns shadow into a character of its own. Widely held up as the genre's gold standard and a high point of Mitchum's career, it's for anyone who likes their crime stories with no clean hands and no way out.
