Knight Moves

Knight Moves (1992) is a Canadian-German crime thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Carl Schenkel. A high-stakes chess tournament on a remote island turns deadly when women start turning up murdered. Christopher Lambert plays grandmaster Peter Sanderson, who finds himself at the top of the suspect list — and on the receiving end of coded puzzles left by the killer at each crime scene.

Tom Skerritt's detective and Diane Lane's psychologist work the case from the outside, but the real game is between Sanderson and whoever is pulling his strings. Schenkel keeps the ambiguity alive: Sanderson is a man who wins by anticipating every move, which makes it genuinely hard to decide whether he's being manipulated or orchestrating the whole thing.
