Synopsis
Alias Grace (2017) is a Canadian historical drama miniseries you can watch online on iFILM, adapted by Sarah Polley from Margaret Atwood's novel and directed by Mary Harron. Sarah Gadon plays Grace Marks, an Irish immigrant who spent nearly three decades imprisoned after her employer was found dead at his Ontario estate in 1843.
The series is structured around a series of sessions between Grace and the young psychiatrist Simon Jordan, played by Edward Holcroft. He arrives convinced he can establish the truth about what happened. Grace tells him her memory of the event is simply gone. The more time he spends with her, the more his certainty unravels — and the camera stays squarely on Gadon's face, giving nothing away. Zachary Levi appears in a supporting role that takes an unexpected turn midway through.
Atwood built her 1996 novel from actual court records and newspaper coverage of a case that gripped mid-Victorian Canada. Harron and Polley carry that tension into the series without resolving it cleanly, because the real case was never resolved cleanly either. Six episodes, and the question of Grace's guilt stays open right to the end — which is the point. Stream Alias Grace online on iFILM.
