Grace Marks has spent fifteen years behind bars and swears she remembers nothing of the two killings. The season is built almost entirely from conversation: Dr. Simon Jordan arrives to write a psychiatric report and listens as she walks him through her life — the crossing from Ireland, her bond with fellow servant Mary Whitney, the post at the Kinnear farm where everything fell apart. The further her account goes, the less sure the doctor is of who is sitting across from him. A wronged innocent. A practiced liar. A woman who genuinely cannot reach her own memory. It builds toward a hypnosis session and a question that never quite resolves.
Sarah Polley wrote it, Mary Harron directed, and Sarah Gadon carries the lead. All six episodes run on a split timeline and refuse to tell you what to believe — that restraint is the point.
