It opens as a friendship between two households. Charming neighbor Robert Berchtold eases into the lives of Bob and Mary Ann Broberg so gently that nobody senses the trap. One step at a time he draws close to their daughter Jan, turns the parents against each other, and spins a web of lies the family can't climb out of for years. Mckenna Grace plays the girl whose childhood gets stolen; Lio Tipton plays her grown self, telling the story from the far side of it all.

The series deliberately skips the cheap-thriller route and lays bare the mechanics of manipulation: how decent, loving people keep trusting the one person they shouldn't. A team of directors led by Eliza Hittman shaped it. Hard to sit through, but it matters — a clear look at what abuse looks like when it wears a friend's smile.
