Synopsis

His father is dead, the estate is ruined, the family mine sits closed, and Elizabeth — the woman he loved, certain he'd been killed — is engaged to his cousin Francis. Ross sets about rebuilding from nothing and does what his class considers unthinkable: he reopens the pit and takes in a sharp-tongued miner's daughter, Demelza. Their bond sets the parish talking, while the rising banker George Warleggan circles everything Ross has left.
