Synopsis
Everybody's Fine (Stanno tutti bene, 1990) is Giuseppe Tornatore's tender Italian drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Matteo Scuro, a widowed retired bureaucrat from Sicily, is tired of waiting for his five grown children to come home — so he packs a bag and sets off across Italy to surprise each of them.
He travels from the island to the mainland carrying gifts and a fond, stubborn belief that all five have built the lives he once dreamed for them. Rome, Naples, Florence, Milan, Turin — at every stop he's met with smiles, rehearsed reassurances and carefully buried truths. Nobody wants to disappoint the old man. The longer the trip runs, the clearer it becomes that the family's polished image rests on what no one is saying.
Marcello Mastroianni plays the father with quiet, aching restraint in one of his great late roles. Tornatore made this right after Cinema Paradiso, with the same affection for memory and the same composer — Ennio Morricone, whose score carries the film from gentle comedy into soft heartbreak. A warm, melancholy story about a parent's love and the illusions we let them keep. Stream Everybody's Fine (1990) online on iFILM.
