Synopsis

The Two Jakes (1990) is a neo-noir mystery you can watch online on iFILM, directed by and starring Jack Nicholson as weary private eye Jake Gittes. Los Angeles, 1948. A real-estate developer named Jake Berman hires Gittes for what looks like a standard adultery job — catch the wife in the act, collect the fee, move on.

It goes wrong immediately. Instead of a confrontation, Berman pulls a gun and kills his wife's lover on the spot. The dead man turns out to be Berman's own business partner, and suddenly Gittes is standing in the middle of something planned rather than passionate. Harvey Keitel, Meg Tilly, Madeleine Stowe, and Eli Wallach fill out a cast as complicated as the plot.

As a follow-up to Chinatown, the film shifts the poison from water rights to oil reserves beneath the city — same corrupt machine, different decade. Nicholson keeps Gittes' voice flat and his illusions gone. Stream The Two Jakes online on iFILM.
