Synopsis
Brideshead Revisited (2008) is a period drama you can watch online on iFILM. Julian Jarrold's film adapts Evelyn Waugh's novel, following modest Oxford student Charles Ryder as he is pulled into the orbit of the aristocratic Flyte family and watches his own life split in two.
First comes Sebastian (Ben Whishaw), charming and drunk, dragging a teddy bear everywhere he goes. Then comes his sister Julia (Hayley Atwell), whom Charles (Matthew Goode) loves with no real hope. Towering over the estate sits their mother, Lady Marchmain (Emma Thompson), whose Roman Catholic faith decides who in this house is allowed to love and who must repent. Charles wants beauty and freedom; what he gets is other people's rules and other people's guilt.
Shot at the real Castle Howard in Yorkshire, the film treats its lavish interiors as a trap rather than a backdrop. This is slow, mournful storytelling about the way money and religion grind down real feeling — made for viewers who love a British costume drama and don't fear a bitter ending.
