Synopsis
Guys and Dolls (1955) is a lavish Hollywood musical directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz — watch it online on iFILM. Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, and Jean Simmons headline this adaptation of the Broadway show that ran over 1,200 performances after its 1950 debut.
Sky Masterson (Brando) takes a wager he cannot resist: convince strait-laced missionary Sarah Brown (Simmons) to join him on a trip to Havana. Meanwhile Nathan Detroit (Sinatra) is scrambling to bankroll an illegal craps game while dodging the marriage he has been promising Adelaide for fourteen years. Two bets, two couples, one vintage New York underworld. Brando singing live in a musical is its own curiosity — he holds his own while being visibly out of his natural element, and the slight awkwardness gives his Sky a rough-edged charm that a slicker performer would have smoothed away.
