Synopsis
Dragonwyck (1946) is a gothic melodrama you can watch online on iFILM — the directorial debut of Joseph L. Mankiewicz.
Connecticut, 1844. Farm girl Miranda Wells (Gene Tierney) accepts an invitation from a wealthy relative and travels to the Dragonwyck estate to work as a governess. Her host, the patroon Nicholas Van Ryn (Vincent Price), is charming, imperious and quietly frightening. His tenants revolt against his rents, the servants whisper about a family curse, and he disappears for hours into a locked tower room.
Mankiewicz, who would later write All About Eve, began his directing career with this adaptation of Anya Seton's novel. Price hadn't yet become horror's king, but his soft-spoken madness already raises the hair on your neck. Gowns, a brooding mansion, inheritance and a vial of poison — vintage 1940s romance turned dark. Stream Dragonwyck (1946) online on iFILM.
