Synopsis
Escape to Athena (1979) is a war-time adventure romp with a comic streak, ready to watch online on iFILM. Summer 1944, a German-held Greek island, a prisoner camp. The commandant, Major Hecht, cares far less about his prisoners than about the ancient treasures hidden in a mountaintop monastery.
A setup like this only works with a stacked cast. Roger Moore plays the antiquities-obsessed commandant, Telly Savalas leads the local resistance, and the prisoners include David Niven as a professor, Elliott Gould and Sonny Bono as a pair of stranded entertainers, plus Stephanie Powers and Claudia Cardinale. Everyone wants out. Everyone is also quietly eyeing the same loot.
Director George P. Cosmatos — later behind Rambo: First Blood Part II and Tombstone — keeps it moving through motorcycle chases, blasts and shootouts without dropping the gags.
