Synopsis
The People vs. Fritz Bauer (Der Staat gegen Fritz Bauer, 2015) is a German historical thriller directed by Lars Kraume that you can watch online on iFILM. It reconstructs the true story of West Germany's most stubborn postwar prosecutor — a man determined to put the architects of Nazi atrocity on trial at a time when his own country would rather move on.
The setup is precise: it's the late 1950s, the economic recovery is going well, and almost nobody wants to dig. Then Bauer, played by Burghart Klaußner, receives a letter from Argentina suggesting that Adolf Eichmann — one of the men who organized the deportations — is living there under an assumed name. The West German legal system is riddled with former Nazi officials; Bauer can't trust it. His only option is to go to Mossad in Jerusalem, which means committing treason against the state he's trying to save.
Kraume keeps the film rooted in procedure and moral cost rather than espionage thriller mechanics. Klaußner won the German Film Award for Best Actor for the role — earned for a performance that never turns Bauer into a hero and never lets you forget the exhaustion underneath.
