Synopsis
The Ren & Stimpy Show (1991), Season 1 is the Nickelodeon cartoon you can watch online on iFILM — thirteen episodes that introduce a high-strung chihuahua and the dumbest cat in animation.
There's no running plot here. Each episode drops Ren and Stimpy into a fresh disaster and lets it curdle. Stimpy wins a TV contest and ditches his pal for Hollywood. Commander Höek loses his mind in deep space, one finger hovering over the History Eraser Button. The two pose as a mouse and its owner, then as Dalmatians working for an unhinged fire chief. Half the fun is the animation itself — close-up, grimy, gleefully gross in a way kids' TV had not tried before.
John Kricfalusi built a look that later seeped into a whole generation of adult cartoons. This first run is the rawest version of the show, before the network started pushing back, and it ends on the Happy Helmet and that maddening "Happy Happy Joy Joy" song.
