Synopsis
Manderlay (2005) is a Danish drama you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by Lars von Trier as the second chapter of his USA — Land of Opportunities trilogy, following Dogville (2003). Bryce Dallas Howard takes over the role of Grace, alongside Danny Glover, Willem Dafoe, Lauren Bacall, and John Hurt.
It is 1933. Grace stumbles upon a cotton plantation in Alabama where the residents have no idea slavery ended decades ago. A handwritten code called "Mam's Law" still governs every detail of their lives. Grace decides to stay and liberate them — whether they ask for it or not.
Von Trier shoots on a bare stage with chalk-drawn locations, the same theatre-stage aesthetic from Dogville, stripping away any visual comfort. What he puts in its place is a provocation about power, paternalism, and the violence that hides inside imposed freedom. It is deliberately infuriating, and that is entirely the point.
