About

Synopsis

The Gate (1987) is a Canadian horror film directed by Tibor Takács — watch online on iFILM. A tree gets pulled out of a suburban backyard and the hole underneath turns out to connect to somewhere very bad. Twelve-year-old Glen — a young Steven Dorff in his screen debut — and his heavy-metal-obsessed friend Terry read the wrong words aloud over the pit, and the demons on the other side take it as an invitation.

The parents are away for the weekend. Glen's teenage sister Al is throwing a party. Neither fact helps. What follows is a modest-budget horror film that punches well above its weight on practical creature work: the miniature demons are filmed with enough ingenuity that they still hold up. Takács uses the suburban setting to maximum effect — everything ordinary and familiar slowly stops being either.

Dorff carries the whole thing at thirteen, which is the real surprise. Stream The Gate (1987) on iFILM.
