Synopsis
The Caine Mutiny (1954) is a Columbia Pictures wartime courtroom drama you can watch online on iFILM. The USS Caine is a battered minesweeper in the Pacific, and its new commanding officer — Captain Queeg — arrives with a rulebook, a fixation on minor infractions and an increasingly visible instability. His officers watch and wait.
During a typhoon, First Officer Maryk relieves Queeg of command. That act of judgment lands him in front of a court martial, with attorney Lieutenant Greenwald, played by José Ferrer, tasked with proving the man wasn't a mutineer — he was right. Humphrey Bogart plays Queeg with everything stripped back: a nervous eye, steel balls clicking between his fingers, a voice that keeps almost cracking. It's the kind of performance that makes you uncomfortable and you can't look away.
Adapted from Herman Wouk's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, the film collected seven Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, with Bogart up for Best Actor. Edward Dmytryk keeps the tension airtight by trusting the words and the faces — barely a battle scene in sight. Stream The Caine Mutiny (1954) online on iFILM.
