Crossfire

Crossfire (1947) is an American film noir directed by Edward Dmytryk that you can watch online on iFILM. A civilian named Joseph Samuels turns up dead in a hotel room, and the trail points straight at a group of soldiers just discharged from the army, drifting between bars that same night.

Police captain Finley, played by Robert Young, works the case by hearing the same evening retold in clashing flashbacks. Sergeant Keeley runs his own investigation to clear his friend Mitchell, the man the evidence keeps pointing to. And once the real motive surfaces, it turns out the killing was driven not by money but by raw hatred. The cast stacks up three Roberts — Young, Mitchum and a chilling Robert Ryan — alongside Gloria Grahame.

Dmytryk adapted Richard Brooks' novel and turned it into one of the first Hollywood pictures to confront everyday bigotry head-on.
