Synopsis

Shot in black and white and running close to three hours, the film stacks the deck with stars: John Wayne as the steady old sailor, Kirk Douglas as his hot-tempered exec, plus Patricia Neal, Henry Fonda and Dana Andrews. Torrey hauls friends out of trouble, cuts through careerist scheming and tries to rebuild things with his estranged officer son — all while planning Operation Skyhook, a risky island push that could swing the Pacific war.
