Synopsis
Twelfth Night (1996) is a British Shakespeare adaptation you can watch online on iFILM. A shipwreck tears apart the twins Viola and Sebastian, and the stranded young woman disguises herself as a man simply to survive in an unfamiliar land.
Calling herself Cesario, Viola enters the service of Duke Orsino and soon becomes his most trusted confidant. The trouble is she falls for the duke herself, while he keeps sending her to woo the grieving Countess Olivia on his behalf — and Olivia promptly falls for the messenger, never guessing a woman hides under the man's clothes. The tangle of mismatched love only tightens, while downstairs the servants set an elaborate trap for the pompous steward Malvolio in one of Shakespeare's cruelest comic schemes. Imogen Stubbs plays Viola, Helena Bonham Carter is Olivia, and Nigel Hawthorne is Malvolio.
Director Trevor Nunn, longtime head of the Royal Shakespeare Company, shifts the action to an elegant nineteenth century while keeping the verse intact. The cast also features Ben Kingsley as the fool Feste, plus Richard E. Grant and Imelda Staunton. A perfect way into Shakespeare for anyone who fears it might bore them: there's laughter, ache, and plenty of mistaken identity. Stream Twelfth Night (1996) online on iFILM.
