Synopsis
The Stendhal Syndrome (La sindrome di Stendhal, 1996) is an Italian psychological horror-thriller by Dario Argento that you can watch online on iFILM. Detective Anna Manni is hunting a brutal serial killer through Florence when the paintings start hitting back — canvases dissolve around her, fish leap from a Brueghel, and she collapses on the gallery floor. The Stendhal syndrome of the title is real: an acute psychotic episode triggered by overwhelming exposure to great art. Argento uses it as the mechanism by which a hunter becomes prey.
Asia Argento carries the film through several different versions of Anna — before, during and after a trauma that rewires her completely. It is a demanding performance, and she does not soften it. Thomas Kretschmann plays the killer with a flat, almost bureaucratic menace. This is Argento stepping away from his signature neon-lit giallo style toward something rawer: less about visual spectacle, more about watching a psyche come apart at the seams. The film disturbs rather than shocks. Stream The Stendhal Syndrome online on iFILM.
